braces sucks! but i simply love dental appointments. my ticket out of school every month. and i can even arrange for my dental appointment to clash with whichever lesson i want. ;) which is just sweet! anyone wanna guess what lesson that is?

my dad: what paper do you have tmr?
my sis: chem.
my dad: OH, your power subject right. ;)
me: -_-

this conversation that transpired during dinner was rather disturbing. and i was suddenly forced to remember that my report card is presently residing in an inconspicuous area in my room, awaiting its inevitable encounter with my parents. i wish that day would never come. report cards can have tragic effects on my holidays. and i really wish my tchers would phrase their remarks in a better way.

here are 3 examples of bad phrasing.
1. 'gen is capable of good results' - this is interpreted as 'gen has not gotten good results.'

2. 'gen is a hardworking, helpful, bright, considerate and diligent girl. HOWEVER..' - the 'however' automatically removes all the positive attributes that precede it.

3. 'her results are an indication of the hard work she has put in' - this is interpreted as 'her results are an indication of the hard work she NEEDS to put in'

i think tchers should just stick to short remarks and nthn will go wrong. like say
'gen is an active and helpful student.' - pri 1
or like my favourite, 'she gets along well with others.' - pri 5

tho i'm not sure if they were doing me a favour or cos they were chi tchers who had limited eng vocab. heh. whatever it was, they're doing it the right way. :)
